German chocolate cake is a rich chocolate layer cake topped with a coconut and pecan frosting.

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes.
  5. Stir in boiling water until well combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely.
  9. For frosting, cook butter, condensed milk, and egg yolks over medium heat until thickened.
  10. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and pecans.
  11. Spread frosting between layers and on top of the cake.
