Description
Greek New Year’s bread, also known as Vasilopita, is a traditional bread served during the New Year to celebrate St. Basil’s Day.
Ingrédients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 large eggs
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional)
- 1 coin (for good luck)
Instructions
- Warm the milk and dissolve the yeast in it.
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add melted butter and eggs to the flour mixture.
- Pour in the yeast mixture and vanilla extract.
- Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf.
- Insert the coin into the dough.
- Let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes.
- Cool and serve on New Year’s Day.
Notes
- You can decorate the bread with almonds or powdered sugar.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container.
- Traditionally, the person who finds the coin is blessed for the year.
