Greek New Year’s Cake: 7 Steps to Sweet Luck

Description

Traditional Greek cake served during New Year’s celebrations.


Ingrédients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 coin (for the Vasilopita tradition)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour and baking powder.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs and sugar until fluffy.
  4. Add milk, olive oil, and vanilla to the egg mixture.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture, stirring until smooth.
  6. Fold in walnuts and raisins.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased cake pan.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. After cooling, hide the coin in the cake.
  10. Slice and serve to celebrate the New Year.

Notes

  • Serve with a cup of coffee or tea.
  • Decorate with powdered sugar on top.
  • Traditionally, the first slice is for Saint Basil.
