Description
Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish made with rice and black-eyed peas, often enjoyed on New Year’s Day for good luck.
Ingrédients

- 1 cup black-eyed peas
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 smoked ham hock
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Soak the black-eyed peas overnight in water.
- In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
- Add soaked black-eyed peas, ham hock, and water.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
- Add rice, salt, and pepper; stir well.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 20 minutes or until rice is tender.
- Remove the ham hock, shred the meat, and return it to the pot.
- Serve warm and enjoy.
Notes
- Use fresh black-eyed peas for better flavor.
- Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Can be served with cornbread.
